The role of foreign volunteers at louverture cleary is broad and affects many areas of community life.

TEACHING: Their primary responsibilities are in the classroom, where they cover many classes ranging from language and religion to laboratory science and computers.

COMMUNITY LIFE: It is perhaps outside the classroom where the volunteers make their greatest contributions. Their very presence gives witness to the philosophy of sacrifice for the sake of others that is so important to the Louverture Cleary community. The volunteers live at the school. This fact allows them to spend an incredible amount of time with the students.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Volunteers teach sport classes to the four youngest classes in the school, as well as run extra-curricular sports activities. Volunteers each tutor four hours per week during study hours, which provides a valuable opportunity for the students to have individual attention from their teachers. This has obvious academic benefits. It also gives the students, adolescents who live away from their families five days each week, sources of stable adult interaction.

EMPOWERMENT OF FEMALE STUDENTS: As Louverture Cleary continues to work for the empowerment of its female students, the continued support of the “Celebrate Women” program given by the volunteers is invaluable. Female volunteers are able to lead the girls, both in empowerment groups to encourage strength in and outside the classroom, and in daily example.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: Each volunteer has personal responsibilities for a different area of the school: the language program, development of the science curriculum, which has expanded to cover laboratory science, and the scheduling and continued implementation of the community service program.

PROGRAM SUPPORT: The Haitian Project asks its volunteers to assist in raising funds necessary for their support in Haiti. We help you in choosing how and when to go about this. The support you raise, along with that we give you, covers your expenses in Haiti and helps you raise awareness about the project and its work in Haiti.
